HUSH No More Executive Director Vanessa Guyton is calling upon fellow citizens in the Columbia, SC area to join the life-reclaiming organization’s community walk to end domestic violence on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022 starting at 8 a.m.
The all-ages walk begins at 8:00 AM and concludes 11:00 AM. This free family event includes a walk along the Congaree River, a Domestic Violence Survivor Tribute for Victim Advocate Dr. Sonya Lewis, a Domestic Violence Fallen Officer Tribute for Officer Drew Barr of Cayce Police Department, as well as other community nonprofit organizations and vendors. HUSH Topics are those topics that individuals, families, and organizations have a hard time discussing, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, sexual harassment, etc.
Statistics show that these topics happen in 1 out of 6 households and the numbers are growing. Studies show 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic violence. Every 98 seconds someone is sexually assaulted. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men experience sexually harassed in the workplace. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of sexual violence by an intimate partner. Speaking out is the first step of escape.
